A list of summer 2014 fun activities

Summer is almost here. Many camps and workshops are planned to keep children of all ages busy this summer. They are also designed to help children have a good time learning and playing during the hot summer months.

Dance

Session 1 - June 16-26

Creative Movement Ballet/Tap

Ages: 2 to 4 years old

Cost: $45

5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays

Class includes 30 minutes of ballet and 30 minutes of tap. Creative movement is dedicated to developing the dancers' motor skills. Dancers are introduced to basic ballet steps like plie, tendu, passe and arabesque. In tap, they are introduced to toe tap, heel, toe back and shuffle. Includes parachute activities.

Ages: Kindergarten to second grade

4:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday

Class includes 15 minutes of stretching, including back stretches and shoulder stretches. The last 45 minutes of class are dedicated to learning forward rolls, wheel barrows, straddle rolls and back walkovers. For experienced tumblers, we work on cartwheels, round-offs, running round-offs, front walkovers and flip-flops. We also use a balance beam and trampoline.

Jazz/Choreography

Ages: Third to sixth grades, 4-5:15 p.m.; seventh and up, 5:15-6:30 p.m.

Cost: $55

Mondays and Wednesdays

Class includes 20 minutes of stretching, 15-20 minutes of center work and 20 minutes of across-the-floor steps and combinations. The last 15 minutes of class is dedicated to learning a jazz center routine with the latest dance steps.

Session 2 - July 14-24

Creative Movement Ballet/Tap

Ages: 2 to 4 years old

Cost: $45

4:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays

The last 30 minutes of the class begins with stretching, basic jazz terminology in the center and across-the-floor moves, including leaps, turns and kicks.

Lyrical and Contemporary

Ages: Third to sixth grades, 4-5 p.m.; seventh and up, 5-6 p.m.

Cost: $45

4-5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays

Class begins with a 20-minute stretch. We also focus on being aware of the body while dancing; this includes working on the ability to perform while dancing and not just going through the motions. Class includes short center combinations, applying the skills learned earlier in the class.

Sensational '60s for 2-year-olds

9-11 a.m Fridays

Class cost: $40

In this four-hour camp, we will go back in time to the sensational '60s, bringing back Disney's classic "Mickey Mouse Club." Come be a part of the Mickey Mouse marching band as we dance and sing with musical props to the Disney classics. We will also see Disney's version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the story by William Shakespeare, which was developed into a ballet by George Balanchine in 1962. During the arts and crafts time, we'll customize our own Mickey and Minnie Mouse ears to wear the last day of camp at the final parade or come dressed as your favorite Disney character.

Supercharged '70s for ages 3 to 5

9 a.m.-noon Mondays and Wednesdays

Class cost: $94

This 12-hour camp is packed full of fun as we take a trip to the supercharged '70s, bringing back big-name guest stars who appeared in skits and song routines with who else but the Muppets? Come join Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, Animal and others as we learn tap and ballet steps to the most popular songs from the '70s such as "Movin' Right Along" and "The Rainbow Connection." Arts and crafts time will be creative and fun as we create our own Muppet puppets. We'll use our puppets on the last day of class to make our own mini "Muppet Movie."

Electrifying '80s for ages 6 to 7

9 a.m-noon Tuesdays and Thursdays

Class cost: $95

In this 12-hour camp, students learn ballet, tap, jazz and hip-hop to the legends who revolutionized this era in music and fashion such as Madonna, Michael Jackson, The Go-Go's, The Pointer Sisters and many others. We'll also discover historical events that shaped the decade - the tragedies and great moments with fun '80s trivia games. The last day of class, come dressed in '80s style for our electrifying '80s party celebrating one of the best decades of all time

Knockout '90s for ages 8 to 12

1-5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays

Class cost: $115

Get ready to learn and play some fun trivia games about the nostalgic '90s and dust off your sneakers, ballet, tap, and jazz shoes. This 16-hour camp will be divided into age groups. We're going to learn combinations to the artists who stepped out on the scene in the knockout '90s such as N'SYNC, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, The Backstreet Boys, the Spice Girls and more.

Master Blaster for ages 13 and up

1-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays

Class cost: $115

This 16-hour camp is the ultimate Classic Rewind. Take a trip through all the decades: '60s, '70s, '80s and '90s. We will learn ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary and hip-hop to the great artists of each decade. We will play fun trivia games as we learn about historical events, revisit the popular TV shows and movies of the times and learn about the music artists and how they influenced each decade.

Theater Production

"The Lion King" for age 2

9-11 a.m. Fridays

Class cost: $40

This four-hour camp will take a look at one of the all-time favorite children's musicals, "The Lion King." We will watch clips from the movie as well as the original Broadway production and learn dances to our favorite songs such as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," "Hakuna Matata" and "They Live in You." During arts and crafts time, we'll make our own "Lion King" masks.

"Peter Pan" for ages 3 to 5

9 a.m.-noon Monday and Wednesday

Class cost: $95

Come take flight with us in this 12-hour camp as we spin our way through Neverland. Peter Pan will take us on a magical adventure as we explore dance and creative movement in ballet and tap with our favorite characters such as Tinker Bell, the lost boys, Captain Hook, pirates, Tiger Lily and the mermaids of the lagoon. Students will create their own treasure chests during arts and crafts time and fill them with all the treasure they find at the scavenger hunt.

"Annie" for ages 6 and 7

9 a.m.-noon Tuesdays and Thursdays

Class cost: $95

"Annie" dance camp will focus on learning dance styles and choreography from the Broadway show "Annie" and teach proper technique in ballet, jazz and tap. Dance with buckets, mops and fun props. Dancers will view clips from the musical, play acting games, sing and dance tap and jazz to this classic theater production.

"Grease" for ages 8 to 12

1-5 p.m Mondays and Wednesdays

Class cost: $115

Based on the high school musical "Grease," in this 16-hour camp, students will learn and rehearse dialogue through scene study and character development as well as musical production numbers. Routines will be cast, rehearsed and performed like a professional theater production.

"A Chorus Line" for ages 13 and older

1-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays

Class cost: $115

"A Chorus Line" explores the dreams and aspirations of dancers competing for eight spots in the chorus of a new Broadway musical. Inspired by this popular musical, we will hold the audition using the students' own audition material and writing. Students will prepare a one- to two-minute monologue and a one- to two-minute Broadway-style routine.

Summer Play Time

Two days per week. Bring your day care, camp kids or just bring your friends to come for organized games and activities along with open gym from 1:30-3:30 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday. Cost is $15 per person. (Nonmembers must sign a waiver.)

Mount Manning

Come play on our multilevel play area with tons of slides, tunnels, a zip line and loose foam pit. The mountain is open to the public during birthday parties, open gym, summer play time and classes made just for you.

Open gym

Come practice new skills you are learning or just come have a great time. Cost is $6 per hour for Manning members and $8 per hour for nonmembers. It will be $2 more per person for Mount Manning access. Nonmembers must sign a waiver.

Musikgarten Viktoria will offer music classes for families with children ages 0 to 5 years of age.

Classes will be at Pidder Patter at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays in June and July.

Each class lasts 30 to 40 minutes and involves singing, dancing, rhythm patterns, tonal patterns and the exploration of simple instruments.

Cost: Summer passes are $100 and allow you to attend all classes offered.

Theatre Victoria Triple Threat Summer Camp

Stars of Tomorrow

A fun and educational introduction to theater. Explore acting, singing and dancing while working within a group. Newly discovered stars shine brightly as they bring camp to a close with "On the Boards." Campers are provided with a camp T-shirt and snacks.

Two weeks of intensive workshops designed to illustrate what it means to be a triple threat. This educational and dynamic camp develops the confidence and abilities every performer needs to be successful.

Breakout sessions focus on the three performance disciplines. Campers develop the necessary skills for practical application in life and on the stage and then shine as they perform in one of the camp musicals during the T3 Showcase.

Tech Day puts the spotlight on the other side of theater with a hands-on introduction to costuming, scenic painting and stage lighting.

In T3 Olympics, groups vie for the T3 Olympic Goblet. Parents, campers and friends enjoy this fun-filled day of friendly competition at the The Texas Zoo.

Camper's tuition includes: snacks, camp T-shirt, production script and rehearsal CD.

This camp involves singing, storytelling, songwriting, crafts, listening exercises, marching bands and much more. Snack included.

Roxaboxin Camp

June 9-13

Grades: third to fifth

Come with your active imagination. Story time, a scavenger hunt, cardboard boxes and paint will lead students to create a magical place. Constructing a fantasy Main Street and tour guide presentation will create a lasting memory.

Craft Camp

June 16-20

Grades: kindergarten to fourth

Learn to make crafts that you can wear and share. Students will use a knitting loom to make baby hats to donate to local hospitals and a hat to take home. Other crafts include rubber band bracelets, woven necklaces, headbands, mini Christmas trees to decorate and more.

Lego WeDo Robotics - soccer

June 23-27

Grades: second to fifth

Concepts of simple machines such as gears, pulleys, levers and wheels are used through a series of Lego building projects. Digital Simulation and Robotics Summer Camp

UHV Summer Soccer Camps

Cost: early registration, $120, for either the morning or evening session, or $170 for both. Early registration lasts until 10 days before the camp start dates. Add $10 extra for late registration.

UHV summer soccer camp is designated to meet the demands of player development in a positive, creative and fun learning environment. Campers will be taught fundamental skills and advanced-level technical training to further develop and challenge their skill level. Campers will be instructed on proper technique in passing, receiving, dribbling, shooting and heading.

The camp is directed by UHV soccer coach Adrian Rigby. Camp staff is made up of high school and club coaches from elite programs across the nation.

Other classes offered are Minors in Possession. This class is for students who have been ordered by the courts to take alcohol awareness classes. Classes are Saturdays.

Pools

Tanglewood Swimming Pool, 401 Rosewood Drive, is accepting new members. This is the largest neighborhood pool in Victoria.

The pool is open seven days a week from May 23 through Sept. 1.

The pool has undergone renovations including brand new fencing. Enjoy covered picnic areas, volleyball, barbecue pits, a concession stand, two diving boards, a Typhoon slide and a separate kiddie pool.
