Cinco de Mayo celebrates family, honors history

Third-, fourth- and fifth-graders at Shields Elementary School filled the gym Friday to watch performances by the Shark Steppers, VISD's Ballet Folklorico and former Shields student Marisella Pulido.

The celebration began with students sharing the importance of Cinco de Mayo before the Shark Steppers took the stage to perform the Mexican Hat Dance. Heaven Martinez, 9, twirled in her purple dress with a smile on her face.

"Cinco de Mayo is about being with family," Heaven said. "It doesn't matter if you get anything as long as you're with your family."
