Decora club learns of Sam Houston's life after the Alamo

Texas Heritage, Guest Day and Red Dress Day were celebrated at Decora Study Club's meeting Feb. 12.

K.B. Hallmark III and his wife, Janet, were introduced by Carol Moore, program chairwoman of the day. He spoke as Gen. Sam Houston, reminiscing about his life after the fall of the Alamo and then being elected the first president of the Republic of Texas.

After his second term expired and Texas became a state, Houston served two terms as United States senator and eventually as governor of Texas at the beginning of the Civil War crisis. Texas voted to secede, and Houston was ousted as governor. He and his wife, Margaret, returned to their home in Huntsville where he spent his remaining years.

Francisca Watts introduced Marjorie Jeane who presented a federation report on "Queen of the King Ranch," about Henrietta Chamberlain King, who married Richard King.

The Alamo District Convention will be in Beeville on March 23.

Ann Hudson and Martha Jones were the membership committee. The social committee included Anne Dohmen, Marsha Ricottilli, Jeanette Totah and Linda Johnson.
