Each year more than 2,500 people die and 12,600 are injured in home fires in the United States, with direct property loss due to home fires estimated at $7.3 billion annually.
The Victoria Fire Department responded to 875 calls in 2011 for people who had fallen in their homes.
According to Centers for Disease Control, falls are the leading cause of death from injury in the elderly. More than one-third of adults over age 65 fall each year. Sixty percent of people who die from falls are 75 or older. Eighty-seven percent of broken bones in people older than age 65 are caused by falls. Fifty percent of people hospitalized after a fall will never be able to live independently again. Of those hospitalized for a fall, only half will be alive one year later.
