The Texas Department of Public Safety found the driver of a maroon Ford F-150 who is believed to have fled from the scene of a fatal wreck two miles north of Refugio on Tuesday afternoon.
Troopers found Donald Terrell Starr at his home in Woodsboro that evening. He was issued a ticket charging him with failure to stop and render aid, a third degree felony, after he pulled up in front of two vehicles going north on U.S. Highway 77 and hit the brakes, Senior Cpl. Charlie Ramirez said.
The driver of a semi-trailer behind Starr was able to stop, but Leon Dale Buff, 51, of Corpus Christi, who was driving a Dodge 2500 pickup, wasn't able to stop.
Ramirez said Buff hit the semi-trailer's right rear and landed in the ditch near a telephone pole.
He died on impact, the trooper said.
Troopers put out a call to find the driver of the truck, who they described at the time as a large man with tattoos on his arms. He was seen heading south on U.S. Highway 77 after the accident.
