Two Victoria men were critically injured in a hit and run wreck just before 2 a.m. Sunday in San Marcos.

Cas Kutach, 26, and Roman Fanelli, 29, both of Victoria, were transported to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin after they were hit by a Chevrolet pickup at East Hopkins Street and North LBJ Drive, according to a San Marcos Police Department news release.

Kristin Fanelli, 28, of Victoria, was also hit, but was treated and released at a San Marcos hospital.

Roman and Kristin Fanelli, who are husband and wife, teach at Rowland Elementary School in Victoria. Kutach, Kristin Fanelli's brother, is a veteran who started his first week of classes in the criminology program at Texas State University at San Marcos on Aug. 29.

Lynne Kutach, mother of Cas Kutach and Kristin Fanelli, was in Rockport when she got the call about the accident.

"They just told us that they were taking them to Brackenridge and that we needed to get there," she said. "We didn't know the status until three hours later, when we got there."

Fanelli was in the intensive care unit with head trauma, but was in stable condition, a hospital spokesperson said.

Kutach was upgraded to floor care Tuesday. His mother said he has extensive injuries, including a collapsed lung, broken ribs and fractures in his face.

"It is a miracle they didn't get killed," she said. "They were in the crosswalk and they had the right-of-way. They just got hit before they even knew what happened to them."

Roman and Kristin Fanelli, along with friend Jay Meitzen, of Victoria, were in San Marcos for the weekend to show Kutach around, Lynne Kutach said.

"It hit them and I was standing right behind them when it hit ... I was just scared for them. I didn't know what to do," Meitzen said.

They called police, who arrived within minutes, he said.

Kristen Fanelli and Meitzen also kept the other two calm and still while they waited for police, who arrived within minutes.

Officer David Amerson of the San Marcos Police Department stopped a truck matching witnesses description at I-35 and Wonder World Drive, according to the release.

Tiffany Danielle Dahl, 25, was arrested and charged with three felony counts of failure to stop and render aid and two counts of intoxication assault, a third degree felony.

She remained in the Hays County jail under a $75,000 bond.
