Editor, the Advocate:
This is in response to your article regarding the Edna Fire Department on July 21, to point out some incorrect statements.
Fact one: Actually, the Edna EMS Department would be the only part "closed down;" the fire department would still be viable with volunteers. Mr. Janica stated that the volunteers "won't cut it," when in fact, he is a volunteer, and 95 percent of all fires in the state of Texas are handled by volunteers.
Fact two: The ISO rating for each town and county is based primarily on water supply. The cities of El Campo, Bay City and Seadrift (to name a few) all have low ISO ratings with just a volunteer fire department.
Fact three: The Jackson County Hospital District added an EMS service to their list of services without raising taxes. This is a full ALS ambulance service with certified and licensed medics, also doing transfers. They will respond to all 911 calls throughout Jackson County; they even respond below FM 616 to the lower part of the county.
Last, but not least, where was Mr. Chase when this interview was done? He is the director and fire marshal.
Now is the time for the citizens of Edna to contact their council members and mayor for the truth of the matter.
