A 23-year-old Mexican citizen was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Thursday after he was found with more than 900 pounds of marijuana near Yoakum.

A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper found Manuel Salvador Pacheco-Penaloza to be carrying 934 pounds of marijuana in a white Ford F-350 after he stopped the driver on suspicion of speeding about one mile north of Yoakum on Alternate U.S. Highway 77-A at noon Thursday, DPS Trooper Gerald Bryant said Friday.

After stopping, Pacheco-Penaloza ran on foot into a pasture, Bryant said.

The Lavaca County Sheriff's Office and Yoakum Police Department helped set up a perimeter and a Lavaca County deputy caught Pacheco-Penaloza in the field, Bryant added.

Three bundles were found behind the driver's seat and 68 more bundles were found in a hidden compartment in the bed of the truck, Bryant said.

The street value of the seizure is about $765,000, Bryant said.

Pacheco-Penaloza was held on federal charges of possession of a controlled substance because he is not a resident of the United States.
